BC Hydro contributes 2 computers to the North Okanagan Radio Amateur Club

The North Okanagan Radio Amateur Club (NORAC) provides communication services during emergencies and for community events throughout the region.  They were an integral part of the communication system during the 1998 Salmon Arm fires and the 2003 Cedar Creek and Okanagan Mtn fires. Community events such as the Vernon Winter Carnival Parade, Falkland International Sled Dog Races, Falkland Stampede Parade, Armstrong IPE Parade, Run for the Cure, school and community races, and the Penticton Ironman are only some of the many functions where NORAC provides communication services.

“Timely communications can be the lifeline to a community during an emergency and NORAC has proven to be a very notable organization,” said BC Hydro Telecontrol Manager Dave Hein.  “We hope these computers will assist NORAC in their community work.”

NORAC is focused on bringing together persons interested in the art and science of amateur radio and electronics, as well as to increase the awareness of amateur radio in the community.

“BC Hydro has supported NORAC in the past and we’re happy that they recognize the importance of our services to the community,” said NORAC President Doug Reid. “These computers will be integrated into the club station - VE7NOR – located in the Okanagan Science Centre.”
