NORAC helps each year with radio communications at the Falkland International Sled Dog Races. Our purpose is to ensure the safety of the mushers and dogs. As well the amateur volunteers have fun at the check points on the trails. First we meet for an early breakfast at Dennys Restaurant in Vernon. Once at the race site we get organized and determine which check point we are to man. A snowmobile takes us to the check points, where we start by getting a fire going to keep warm. As the dog teams go by each check point we communicate via amateur radio to the start finish line, where Dodie VE7DLT, collects the information. Lunch Time!!... We get together and have cold beverages and cook a whole variety of food on an open fire. The menu includes steaks, sausages, spicy chicken wings, oysters wrapped in bacon, potatoes, shish kebab and spicy shrimp. After the races are completed, we meet in Falkland to wait for the supper that the race organizers put on for the volunteers and what a SUPPER!! Amateur radio volunteers always look forward to the Falkland Sled Dog Races because they know they will have a great time.
A VHF Repeater was setup by Wilf VE7OHM and you can see it in the back of his truck and the antenna was mounted on a ladder and tied to a tree..

The mountain in the background is Tuktakamin Mountain southwest of Falkland – a great repeater site.

The crew includes: Mel VE7STR, Carol VE7SHS, Bob VE7BSL, Dodie VE7DLT, Andy VE7FTR, Duncan VE7ZAV, George VA7PRS, Wilf VE7OHM, Nikki VA7ADY, Roy VE7DTT, Jan VE7TST, Bill VE7KDK, Jessie VE7LYD, Jeff VE7JJV, William VE7WJM and Pamela.
